THE BIG IDEA
Saying No Will Save Your Life
….and help you avoid “I thy no”
I recently went to a buffet for the first time with some friends, and if you’ve been there done that, you would agree with me that it’s an exciting adventure.
What nobody warned me about, though, was the endless trips to the toilet after I sampled everything on the menu—both the familiar dishes and the mysterious ones.
Let’s just say I faced the consequences of my actions sha (don’t judge me, lol).
Why am I sharing this?
It got me thinking about how some creative freelancers take on too much.
As a freelance creative, it's tempting to believe you can handle it all, leading you to accept more jobs than you can manage.
But if you don't learn to recognize what you should be working on at any given time and say no to the rest, you'll end up feeling overwhelmed.
Take it from me, resisting the urge to "eat everything" is key to a healthy freelance life. Not every job is for you!
Yes yes, you need the money, but what’s the point of the money if:
The quality of your work suffers
Deadlines are missed
You end up refunding the client or outsourcing the gig at a higher cost
Your reputation takes a hit
You don't want to be that creative!
See, no long talk - moral of the story? It's okay to say no to gigs that might reduce your creative steeze.
In case you didn’t hear me the first time, NOT EVERY JOB IS FOR YOU. (Yes, I’m shouting).
So, how do you know when to say no to a freelance gig?

CREATIVE SPOTLIGHT
Featuring Nnedi Okorafor
Nnedi Okorafor has just revealed two covers for her upcoming novel “Death of the Author”, releasing January 2025.
The story follows a disabled Nigerian American woman whose success from a sci-fi novel comes at a personal cost. It explores the African diasporic identity, and the deluxe edition will feature both covers.
Why two covers? You’ll have to read the book to find out.
